I Lost My Wedding Ring

The following story explains how my Dad lost his wedding ring and why he now exclusively wears a silicone wedding band.

When I was 15, my dad had a fateful day that is unfortunately experienced by far too many people. It was Australia Day, which meant it was our annual day out on the lake, water skiing and wakeboarding with family and friends. We’d had a few exhilarating trips around the lake clinging for dear life onto a canvas doughnut. After that, my dad and I were teaching my little sister how to water ski. Dad was having typical dad-style flashbacks, reminiscing about the gold-old-days when he was young, fit and went out barefoot waterskiing every weekend with his mates.

We were on the shore and changing over some ropes. Dad was preparing for his turn when he had a thought; ‘I'll just check to make sure my wedding ring won't come off’. He gave it a little jiggle and much to his horror, the gold wedding ring slipped into the air before tracing the shape of an arch and quickly propelling down into the muddy lake below.

Dad spent the next 5 hours wading back and forth through the water, which was thick with clay mud and seaweed along the riverbank. He searched until the sun went down but it seems that ring was hidden where only Sméagol could find it.

This event taught me two things:

  1. Never check to see if your gold ring is going to come off in the water… when you are already in the water.
  2. Precious items like wedding rings are safer left at home when participating in water sports.

I’ve been incredibly conscious of wearing jewellery in the water since having rings of my own and I'm so thankful to now have my Momentum Rings, which are waterproof, anti-slip and durable in the salt and the elements.

Hopefully my dad’s story will never be your story. Your wedding ring really is precious and we want to help you preserve that. So next time you’re planning a day out on the water, make sure to take your Momentum Ring and keep your wedding band somewhere safe. That is what my Dad now does - he has a beveled edge silicone wedding band and it never comes off his finger he loves it so much.
