Everyone is sleeping in. Whether you drank excessive amounts of punch and egg nog the previous day or not, you feel hungover from all of the ham, prawns, potato bake and pavlova you indulged in. Coffee is definitely on the menu just to get you going. But when you do perk up, excitement takes over as you realise the best day of the year has arrived - Boxing Day!
NFL
Living on the east coast of Australia puts us 16 hours in front of the east coast of the United States. This is perfect for kicking off Boxing Day with NFL at 8:30 AEDT. This year, we’ve got the New Orleans Saints hosting the Minnesota Vikings.
Cricket
The highlight of the day for Australians has to be the Boxing Day Test. We love our cricket down under and the highlight of the the cricketing calendar is the 5-day game that kicks off on Boxing Day. Coverage starts at 9:30 with the first ball delivered at 10:30 AEDT. Australia has a 1-0 advantage over India who are facing an uphill battle without the champion player Virat Kohli who returned home for the birth of his child.
NBA
In the NBA, the battle for LA takes place with the Clippers trying to knock off reigning champions in the LA Lakers. This is one of many NBA games taking place and kicks off at 12:00 AEDT.
Big Bash
A normal year would have the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race kicking off at 1:00 AEDT however, a recent COVID outbreak on the northern beaches of Sydney has put a stop to a 76-year tradition.
Finally, if 8 hours of cricket wasn’t enough we’ve got the Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) at 7:30pm AEDT. For the first time viewer of cricket, I’d recommend the first hour of the Test match and the BBL game. The former is the pure form of the game and the Big Bash is exactly as the name implies - fast-paced, high-octane big hitting short-form version of the game.
All of this, makes Boxing Day the best day of the year for those, like me, who loves our sport.
